I know dogs are quick to go after things, but that is a bad habit to let them get into. Not trying to be an arse.

Actually it looks like a Diamondback water snake.. Though that dark stripe down the back is uncharacteristic. Was he dead for a while and laying on his back - that could cause that dark stripe to form while dead.

Yea for sure it wasn't intentional. He's an indoor dog, small breed so goes like a bat out of hell when he gets any excitement. I was walking him and trying to take the picture and he got there too fast. Its definitely not going to be a habit. It was my fault for not having a better handle on his leash but I swatted his mouth as soon as he bit and dropped it immediately.
It had a mortal wound though by that point

No, he was alive in that pic, but was particularly lethargic. Didn't even really react once my Dog chomped him. Just kinda writhed a little bit

Definitely a diamondback water snake.

Harmless, a water snake. A rat snake would have "H" shaped blotches down his back.

yeah, my brilliant Lab once chased a cottonmouth into a hole, got zapped. Side of head swole up like a cantaloupe. Prolly didn't learn his lesson either.
