A game doesn't go by when the number 31 isn't in the dirt at Alex Box stadium. The grounds crew guy who rakes the dirt at 3rd makes sure Wally is in the stadium with us. This is a video I shot in 2012 because I thought it was one of the coolest unknown things/traditions of the box. Always one of my favorite games of the year.

Attending the classic today. Pontiff's are great. It's an awesome foundation.

Wally should have whispered in Paul Mainieri's ear to bunt Deichman.

Why is his number not retired at the new Box?

There was never an official retirement. But that number will never be worn again.

My family and the Pontiffs have known each other long before I was born. Between the season ending at Rice and Wally's death, my dad had a major surgery and was in ICU for about 10 days. One day, Mr. Wally and Wally had come in to see my dad and Wally and I had went and grabbed lunch while our dad's bs'ed. As a 15 year old, this meant so much to me.

I was 15. Out of town for a tournament. Our coach's son played at LSU and was called before there was a news release. He told us in tears. It's still a vivid memory of mine.

I can still remember everything about that morning. My buddy and I, whose brother played at Jesuit with Wally, just got finished up summer football workouts when we got the news. First close death I've experienced.
