Meh, I wish he'd go to games, but he's pretty damn active in his habitat. He runs around, plays in the water, interacts with people, and tries to eat kids at the glass.

Has he roared yet? I know for a while they hadn't ever heard him roar

Weren't they drugged?

Not true. He actually responded within the hour of me sending it.

Here is his response...

quote:

Thanks for the note. It’s only March and I’m getting these already. It should be an interesting season! We have some plans to try to encourage Mike to enter his trailer this next season. We will try these out this summer. That’s all we can do. There is no “teaching” him, since he already knows how to get into his trailer. The issue is not lack of knowledge, but is a very natural and normal lack of desire. These are secretive, forest dwelling animals that are rarely seen by people in their natural habitat, simply because they choose not to be. It amazes me that our tigers have ever left the comfort of their night house to venture out into all the noise and chaos that is an LSU game day, other than for the reason that in the old enclosure, the tiger could be forced to do so. We cannot and will not force him to load. My concern is that if LSU fans continue to escalate this as an issue, it could have the undesirable but not unpredictable effect of causing this to be the last tiger we have. That would be a real shame. Thanks again. DGB David G. Baker DVM, PhD, MPA, DACLAM

This was my response to his e-mail:

quote:

Thank you for the quick response Mr. Baker. I understand your concern about tiger fans escalating this issue. To that I would say make a decision and go public with it. It is fairly obvious that Mike VI will not be making an appearance in Tiger Stadium this year. I say that based off last year and your response to my e-mail. If you're not going to take him into the stadium just announce it and get it out there before the season starts. Fans who care about this tradition will be less disappointed if you let them know beforehand not to expect him. Don't give us that glimmer of hope only to be disappointed. I hope I haven't come off as rude. I know satisfying a passionate fan base & a 450 lb. cat is a tough balancing act. I trust you will make the right decision. Thanks again for keeping Mike healthy and happy.

David Baker never had a problem getting this same tiger into the cage from 2007-2013. Then all of a sudden last year Mike VI had to be forced into the cage? It doesn't make sense to me. There's something going on here that we don't know. I don't believe that stress bullshite for a second. I really PETA has this dude by the balls.

This guy works for a living. Please do not email him about the absence of a cat riding around a football stadium 6 months from now.

He needs to work on getting that cat in his trailer.

He's already trying to lay blame on the fans for us not getting a Mike VII.

Strike another point for whoisnickdoobs.

Where are the results that show the stadium wasn't stressful to the tigers? The burden of proof could go both ways here, but more to you since you're making the argument FOR making Mike do such things. And if you don't think putting a large animal into a small trailer cage and then parading him out in front of 90,000+ (now over 100,000) screaming fans is potentially stressful, especially if said tiger is being forced into the cage...you're being extremely dishonest.

You are so worried about PETA and other such bleeding hearts, yet you want to have the university and the vet in charge force Mike into something he doesn't want to do that is stressful (Stress = harm). This is exactly the sort of ammunition that would benefit PETA when it comes to causing outrage in others outside of their group to change on campus mascots.

Quit being dumb, sir.

Side note: Also, there was a mention of a "boat to Africa" from another poster. Tigers are not from Africa.

Bruh... That's what I've been trying to say. I think he's in with PETA. This very well may be our last tiger.

Yeah, part of his job is getting that tiger into the cage. He does a magnificent job in doing that at other times of the year. Yet somehow, he fails at his job on home game Saturdays in the fall. Do yo people not realize that they load Mike into that cafe all the time? The vets just this year decided to not load him for football games.

Quit being a jerk about it. You sound like a 3 year old kid that can't play with his favorite toy.

Carrying on about it could potentially result in this being the last tiger LSU gets, like the doctor said. Just drop it already.

Exactly.

They are feeding us this bullshite and everyone is buying into it.... Well not me sir. Not me. I for one will not give up without a fight. Our fine University instilled this time honored tradition in 1936 and there is no justifiable reason we should not honor it year after year.

PETA just got told to butt out of tiger conservation by TigersForever Conservation group. Basically said that any Tiger being taken care of is helping tigers from going extinct and that some unfair treatment may be necessary to ensure their preservation. I am sure PETA can understand that

I no longer give a shite whether Mike gets in his trailer and rides around the field.

The staff is incapable or Mike is unwilling, or some of both.

Just end the tradition and leave his arse in his enclosure.

When this one kicks the bucket, think hard about whether to spend money on another tiger.

Uh, this issue did not start in 2014

quote:

In 2007, his first season, he attended all but the first home game. In 2008, he made the first two home games only. In 2009, he was at all but the first home game. He made all but two in 2010 and then didn't miss a game in 2011. In 2012, he attended four games and missed four, two because of a wet field and two others because he did not load into his trailer.
