And Cal won it at Memphis.

You're right, they aren't the same. Kentuckys is much, much worse.
You can rightfully tout cal and Kentuckys accomplishments all day long, but please don't defend the nit thing. Just shrug it off and say suck our cocks we are 37-0.

UK lost a true road game without their best player (who will finish top 3 for ROY this season) in a tournament many people didn't think they belonged in and that the players didn't care about.
Yea and the rest of the roster was full of scrubs Cal recruited from the local YMCA

That is sort of my point. It is an anomaly more than anything. Trying to use it as some sort of way to mock UK is just weak.
Bringing up Lehigh/Mercer as comparable losses is hilarious tho

Serious question about Cal: when did he become such a great recruiter? Obviously being at Kentucky helped, but before then even. He managed to get Derrick Rose and then all of a sudden he had his pick of the litter. Remember that Cousins, Wall, etc were committed to Memphis I believe before he took the UK job.
This isn't bashing Cal, but prior to Rose he had never won anything substantial at Memphis to my knowledge, nor was he any sort of recruiting magnet. What changed?

Duke's losses are definitely worse than Kentucky's to Bob Morris, but that doesn't mean Kentucky's loss still isn't terrible. UK got wiped out by some bad teams that year after Noel went out and that's why it's not as bad in my opinion.
Posted on 3/26/15 at 11:58 pm to RTR America
It is hilarious, because Duke was good enough to make the tournament as a 2/3 seed while Kentucky completely missed the tournament (in the SEC) and lost in the first round of the NIT to Robert fricking Morris. "Ohhhh, but Noel got hurt, how can we win anything with only a half metric frickton of talent on the team".
Posted on 3/26/15 at 11:59 pm to Dawgsontop34
I mean they lost by like 40 at Tennessee. They were already a bubble team before he got hurt.
That team just wasn't very good. Lost all of their big OOC games.

The Lehigh loss wasn't as bad as people make it out to be, although it was still bad. Lehigh actually had arguably the best player on the court in Cj McCollum, who went 10th overall.

Seriously go look at that roster.
They had a walkon playing huge minutes at backup PG. Grad transfer at SG.
They had one stretch when Wiltjer was playing confidently and they looked good. He lost every bit of it down the stretch.
Him and Harrow were a mess at the end of that season.
Teague and Lamb leaving early off of the championship hype really killed them.

First guy to truly embrace the one and done rule. Then proved he could make it work by getting the championship game with Rose.

Still had Archie Goodwin, WCS, and Poythress in addition to Harrow and Wiltjer. That was also one of the weakest CBB seasons I can remember.

But if players don't mesh well and there's bad chemistry the team will almost always suck. It's why guys like Harrow and Wiltjer transferred. Poison and Hood were playing a lot of minutes IIRC and WCS was nowhere near the player he is now. I mean, I was at the UGA game where we won by 10 and we didn't even go .500 that year. That UK team just wasn't very good.

WCS, and Poythress
Willie wasn't nearly the player he is today. Poy in year 3 who's NBA hype is solely based on athleticism.

Archie Goodwin
I mean he barely sees the floor in the NBA.

Well, whose fault is that?

Yea I guess when Jon Hood saw actual minutes the team needed help in the worst way
That guy was such a sucker for never transferring

Nah. He just never healed right after the ACL tear. I don't know that he would've got much anywhere else in D-1 at that point unfortunately.

I mean, it's definitely on the coach. He recruited the players and if they can't mesh well it's on him. It's not easy getting a bunch of all -stars from their AAU team to mesh well together and that's why UK struggled at the beginning of last year IMO. There's occasionally so much talent that it doesn't matter, but getting the guys this year to agree to play 20 minutes a game and put away their egos is one of the best coaching jobs I've seen. If Tony Bennett or someone gets Coach of the Year over Cal they should never give away the award again.

And if you're going to call Cal out for the misfire in 2013, then you can't really talk out of both sides of your mouth and not credit him for his ability to get those egos to mesh every other year he's been at UK.
Posted on 3/27/15 at 12:25 am to BluegrassBelle
The recurring argument has been that the 12-13 team was just bad, or not as talented as his other teams, who were loaded with NBA talent. Ego's don't matter when you have the top two picks in the NBA draft plus 4 other picks.
