Les had any clue that Chavis was mailing it in, he should have suspended him and had one of the other defensive assistants serve as DC for that game. And honestly, how could he not have known? In a month leading up to the game, nobody noticed the DC wasn't doing anything but talking on the phone to A&M? Nobody? How could that be possible? It was a huge blunder by Miles to let this happen.
Go pelini coached the bcs title game and everyone in the country knew he was taking the job. It worked out fine. I think chavis was a lil more secretive about it. Why fire your pool boy for spilling the beans? Why go after the money if we knew all along he was leaving? This deal seems like it happened behind the scenes.

I don't think Chavis wanted to leave but that clause was the dealbreaker. If he wanted to leave he would have left before bowl practices would have started.
Maybe Alleva wanted him to leave?
LSU assistants are paid a lot of money and it's not like LSU hasn't renewed most of them as long as the production is there.

It is untenable to be unable to trust your pool boy. He had to go.

That was all out in the open, Pelini was taking a HC job with Miles' blessing. Pelini wasn't a disgruntled employee who was quitting. And he wasn't going to a division rival. Chavis was apparently pissed off or at least didn't give a damn, and was also being dishonest about it. How do you let a guy like that coach another minute, let alone through the bowl?

On a football coaching staff, if someone, particularly one of the coordinators, isn't doing his job, it should be pretty easy for the head coach to tell.

Pelini had earned a HC job at a prominent program in another conference, had Miles blessing to take the job and was coaching for a National Championship. He earned that job from the success he had at LSU and left LSU with no ill will towards the school, the AD or Les Miles. He did everything above the board.
Chavis was negotiating behind the scenes with an in-division rival for a lateral move, possibly at the expense of thoroughly preparing for a meaningless bowl game.
Yeah, they are the same thing.
