I think it was more to show how Mike ends up where he is in Breaking Bad, giving all his money to his grand daughter.

You are correct.
Nope, the money Mike's DIL has is the "dirty" money Mike's son took before he died and hid in his luggage.
The DIL mentioned finding the money in the luggage which is why she called the Philadelphia cops a couple of episodes ago.
