How do you interpret the ending of The Sopranos?

Most people I have talked to think Tony Soprano gets shot. I think he gets arrested but his helping the FBI w/ terrorists gets his sentence reduced

He and Walter White are both alive, and will clash at some point, but Ray Liotta will have to play Tony.

He died while on vacation in Rome.

Either way I like the ending.
If he is dead, he got what he had coming.
If not, the final scene shows how miserable he is most of his life.
The tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife and that is the fear in the back of his mind every time he walks out the door.

It doesn't matter whether he dies or lives. They wanted us to believe that he is getting set up for something to happen whether it's arrest or assassination doesn't matter. Then the cut off is sort of the punishment for the audience. After getting enjoyment and entertainment watching this piece of shite do his thing, you are denied the climax of seeing Tony get what's coming to him. That's the entire point. I simply put it out of my head and accept the ending as it is. It ended with the Soprano family having dinner.

He's dead. And I link it back to the conversation he had about when you die it "all goes to black". The scene itself is also a pretty big homage to The Godfather.

Like this perspective.

I've never seen an episode but a few months back didn't the creator of the show come out and say - "oh yeah he definitely died"?

I think the whole point of the final scene was to show you what it was like to be in the mind of Tony Soprano. Every moment is tense and he's always looking for potential enemies around him. It kind of gives you an idea of why he was in therapy and had those panic attacks. His life is full of suspense. Every second of every day.
Nothing happened to him at the end.
Nothing happened to him at the end.

Chase said in a recent podcast that he hates how some shows feel the need to make obvious statements with the season or series finale. It is pretty clear what happened but if you think different then that works for you too
He also laughed at the bloggers with all of the Easter egg BS in the diner.
The podcast is called the moment with Brian koppelman on the grant land network on iTunes from 10/30/2014

I believe Tony sailed out into the harbor during a hurricane with Janice's corpse as an emergency raft and started a new life as a lumberjack.

All the evidence is there that he is shot by Members Only Jacket guy. However, I believe that was a dramatic device and I have circled back to my original interpretation:
It is deliberately vague. He might have been killed in front of his family (probably worst case for him, except possibly the family getting it with him) - he might have been arrested in the coming weeks and this represented a final, happy family moment - he could have cooperated (but they always want the guy at the top - he could only give them New York guys who were only nominally above him, anyway), he could have spent another few years looking over his shoulder and died young from natural causes resulting from his lifestyle.
But, we aren't supposed to have a nice, tied up with a bow ending - this is by design.

Chase has said that Tony died. He's dead.
You'll have Sopranos versions of Holocaust deniers and 9-11 inside jobbers telling you different, but Tony is dead.

I always wanted it to be it went to black as if we the audience were wacked

Agreed, even with the "go to black = death" mention earlier.

Dude that walks in wearing the members only jacket caps him. There is a detail article on the subject. Google it.
