so, this whole "matching" thing is a coordinated effort among all medical schools and all hospitals who are taking residents?

This is probably the best/most well thought out attempt at an explanation written at the level that most anyone could understand that I've seen, in case anyone wants a detailed "basic idea" behind it.

honestly, I am really suprised that people would leave this in the hands of something as analytical as a computer...people typically want the ability to slant things a bit when it suits them....
