Treats worked really well for my pup and now I only use them every so often just to reinforce his good behavior.

The best motivator for basic commands. Young pups will shut down on negative reinforcement, treats are the best way to go.
But once a pup gets more into retriever training, definitely want to shy away from the treats, and move towards just praises and negative reinforcement.
