They didn't want to eliminate the # of at-large bids when new conferences emerged. I believe it went to 65 when the Mountain West was created, and I'm not sure but I would assume that there are 3 other auto bids now.

Saw it explained this way the other day. Basically everybody lower than an 11 seed is an automatic qualifier that based on resume alone isn't good enough to get into the tournament. The 11 seed play in games are for teams that were on the bubble but they are better than the teams that won some small conference.

you'd have a new one for the American... i think the 16 seed play-ins are bullshite... 2 of those teams earned their automatic bids on the court and won't get to go to the real tourney

now the last at-large team play-ins, i like.
