Just got back on Sunday.

We stayed up in Kaanapali.

Mamas Fish House. Very good food, great interior and view. Way overpriced but it's Hawaii so everything is.

Road to Hana. Very cool but MANY WATERFALLS ARE DRY AS WERE THE SEVEN SACRED POOLS. That part of the island has gotten less than an inch of rain since December.

Whales are there in plentiful numbers. You see them everywhere.

We did a helo tour, and it's highly worthwhile. We got a topside pic of a whale breaching.

Best fish tacos I ever had is at Coconuts. Sweet baby Jesus they were exquisite and likely have ruined other fish tacos for me.

Never had this fish, but try some Onho. Outstanding.

Lahaina is okay. Tourist trap, straight up. Good for cheesy shopping for curios.

Whaling museum was good

North shore had pretty big swells the week we were there.

Volcano is a must super cool. Bring cold weather gear. The morning we were up there for sunrise it was only 20 degrees with about 25 mph winds gusting to 40.

There is a breakfast joint down the mountain that is just awesome. Macadamia nut and banana pancakes. DAMNED good and damned good coffee.

Ocean water was brisk; 71 degrees.

It was colder than expected but I think we got the last of the shite weather.

The luau posted somewhere up above is legit. Poi sucks but that pulled pork is the shite.

Have fun!

Oh, don't make our mistake and get caught on RTH at night. It wasn't fun driving when you can barely see more than Ray Charles.

Everything Mizzoukills said is spot on. One of my favorite vacation spots and I've been all over Europe, AU and NZ. Biking down from the crater was a blast too.

The problem with Driving and not getting a driver and driving is you miss alot of the scenery. Take your eyes off the road to long and youll end up in the Pacific Ocean

Not true. Just schedule an entire day for the Hana Road and take your time. If you drive the Hana Road and never stop, it'll take you about 2 hours to reach Hana. It'll take you longer if you stop and venture into the forest to view hidden waterfalls, pools, and beaches (detailed in "Maui Revealed). See all the sites on your way to Hana, visit the Hana Grocery Store and Hana Hotel, and then simply drive the Hana Road (without stopping) on your way back to your hotel.

I recommend you purchase Maui Revealed before you depart for Maui. Make a checklist of all the things you want to do based on the information in Maui Revealed.

It will literally tell you shite like this:

There is a spectacular hidden waterfall off the Hana Road between mile marker 7 and 8. When you pass mile marker 7, immediately look to the right for a trail that leads from the road into the bamboo forest. You will probably see at least a few cars parked on the side of the road. This is private property, but the owners turn a blind eye to adventurers as long as you don't pollute or vandalize property. Park your car and look for the break in the fence. There should be a path leading into the bamboo forest. Take that path for about a quarter mile. The path will lead you to a river with very large lava rocks. Navigate across the river. The path will resume on the other side. Continue on the path for another 100 yards. Suddenly you'll come upon an incredible waterfall and scenic pool.

No joke, the Maui Revealed book, in my opinion, is a priceless guide to everything you could possibly see while on a vacation.

We're in the very early stages pf planning our 2016 trip to include Maui, The Big Island and Ouahu.

Probably fly into The Big Island, then hop to Maui, then end in Ouahu. VRBO has quite a few studios that seem they will work out but already looking forward to all the planning.

purchase the "revealed" books for every island you visit and read thru them in advance to plan adventures.

the Hana road it is intimidating at first.

the road to Hana is beautiful but if you want a bit of a rush go around the road on the opposite end of the island, it starts in town not too far from the airport and goes around towards Kaanapali, hair pin turns, no shoulders at some places, you can stop in your lane, open the passenger side door and look straight down to the shoreline, a few scattered carcasses of some not so carefully driven cars of sightseers or locals along the way, beautiful sights but you've really got to pay attention

We went last May. On our return trip from Hana we made it about halfway and then there was a big mudslide that blocked traffic. Happened about 15 cars ahead of us. We had to go back the other way.......at night.......my butthole was puckered tight

the first time I ever did that drive the rental car agreement, in bold letters, prohibited going all the way around, so of course I took that as a direct challenge, it wasn't even paved, just a cow trail really, but it was pretty neat, the last time I did it it was black topped and a decent road, the next time I'll plan on going all the way around, all this Maui talk is making me want to go, and for OP, Kihei Cafe for breakfast is a nice little dive

Okay, so stupid question but is there a better way to book airfare then one way flights the entire time?

The rental agreement is now out of date. The NW side of the island has a beautiful paved road and is smooth sailing. The part past the 7 pools has been fixed since the earthquake in either 06 or 08.

We did a stop at LAX going and stopped in DFW on the way back. Flew American. Live in Houston and would have preferred the United but we waited too long and United got stupid expensive.

Why do you want layovers or transfers ?

Of course

ETA: If it's your first time to Hawaii, simply stay on Maui the entire time and then plan to visit the other islands on another vacation. You may regret spending a lot of your time traveling between the islands when you could be spending that time touring the island you're on. You could be on Maui for two weeks and not see everything.

Therefore, if you were to simply do Maui, you could book a round trip flight from California to Maui and back.

This is my first time, but the wife has been before. We believe we will take our daughter once she gets older, but for one reason or another we have three islands in mind for this trip.

Island hopping looks to cost about $100 per person (plus baggage fees). Probably end up spending about $2800 on airfare alone if we decide to hit different islands so we will have to decide if it is worth the extra $700 or so.
