Our oldest son is graduating in May. Thursday, May 14th is the Main ceremony and May 15th is the Diploma ceremony. Do parents attend the Main ceremony or just the graduates? Also, the Main ceremony is at 5:30. How long do they usually last?

No one goes to the main ceremony. Your son shouldn't even go to that.

My parents came to the main ceremony and Dick Cheney was the speaker. Probably should just skip it and go to the diploma ceremony

I was absolutely miserable at my main ceremony, I ended up walking out before it was over. I'd recommend skipping.

The main ceremony is primarily a recognition of those receiving their doctoral degrees, as well as those receiving special awards (e.g., university medalists with a 4.0 GPA). The commencement speaker also speaks at the main ceremony. The only recognition for graduating undergraduates is that they are asked to stand up and their degrees are conferred by acclamation. Those graduating with an undergraduate degree are not recognized individually.

The ceremony that most parents attend is the college-specific ceremonies, in which each graduate is called by name and permitted to walk across the stage to receive his or her diploma.

Congratulations, by the way, on the occasion of your son's graduation!
