Divisons basically have no effect on playoff seeding anymore. You just play those "closer" teams a few more times.
8 teams make the playoffs in each conference. A division winner is guaranteed a Top 4 spot. But in the case that the 5 seed has a better record than the 4 seed, the 5 seed gets home court advantage. So basically it doesn't mess up seeding at all.

the difference is, you never play those teams 3 times.
you always play your division mates 4 times and you play most of your conference mates 4 times and some 3 times. that rotates
