2015 will count $9.7 million for Detroit & $6.1 million for Miami
2016 will count $28.6 million (18.8% of the 'phins total cap space)
2017 will count $15.1 million
2018 will count $22.1 million
2019 will count $24.1 million

In other words, Suh's contract after the 2015 season is mostly for show and will almost certainly look different before the 2016 season starts. The same thing will likely happen again down the road, either before the 2017 season or the 2018 season.
Eventually, the Dolphins are going to have to pay the piper and the cap hit is going to become too big and there won't be enough years left to fix it. On top of that, only the first three seasons of the contract come with guaranteed salaries.
The good news for Suh is that the way salary cap figures work, the Dolphins almost certainly can't cut him before the 2018 season, especially with a restructured contract. The savings, cap-wise, would be minimal. But things start to change in 2019 and 2020.

It's pretty rare that the team who pays the big bucks is rewarded. You're better off trying to find the player who will one day earn a contract like that.

Why is any of his money on Detroit's cap?

Graham's contract has a cap hit for the Saints in 2015.

Yeah, I don't understand how most of this cap hit stuff works either.
I also don't see how Suh could anyway be worth that. Yes, he's a great player. I get that. But to take up that much of your cap just seems crippling, especially this day in age when goodd Qb's take up so much. Well, I guess we'll see but I see Haynesworth written all over this.

Suh works too hard to be Haynesworth. But I do think this could kill the Dolphins long term.

What's funny is that his base salary for this season is less that a million dollars.
He's goingg to be getting like 100k game checks even though he's making way more than that

I think it has sonething to do with signing bonus type stuff. They don't have to give you 100% of signing bonus up front and they can do it in annual installments
So maybe he is still owed that money from his signing bonus

Everyone says "Why don't we re-structure this guy's contract?"
Well, let's say you want Drew Brees' salary not to hit the Saints as hard this year. It has to go somewhere, so you add it next year. Essentially you take $5 million from the cap this year, and move it to next year.
Well, what happens if we trade or cut Brees before next season starts? That $5 million doesn't go away. It still hits the cap figure.

Detroit kept kicking the can down the road, by restructuring his contract, next year they will have to do something with Calvin Johnson ($24 million cap hit in 2016)
