Great suggestions so far! What's the board's thoughts on a bike tour of ancient Rome?

My initial concern is that we'd be rushed to see all the sights and not have time to walk around and appreciate the history.

First time in Rome and you want to get a bike? You're gonna get run over by some crazy drivers.

I wouldn't worry about feeling rushed when seeing the ruins. Most of the ruins have been reduced to a pile of rocks. It's been 17 years since I was there, but I remember being let down when viewing the ancient Rome ruins.

Rick Steves has walking tours that you can download to your iPhone. You can do them at your own pace. Mash Here

Also, download Trip Advisor City Guides APP to your phone. If you get one of those minimal phone/text plans you can use the map and restaurant feature. In Prague and Budapest, I found it to be VERY accurate.

If you don't see the Pantheon and the Vatican (Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's, Vatican Museum), you might as well not go to Rome. ETA: Make sure you have a reservation for the Vatican Tour.

You must eat the following: Gelato, Pizza Margherita, and pasta carbonara. Also, drink lots of wine. Chianti and Fragolino. Can't miss.

Do NOT go into a shirt shop with all Roma Soccer jerseys and ask for a Lazio or Napoli jersey. You will start an international incident.

Good luck. It's a great trip. Wish I could go back.
