Finally did the WW II museum New Orleans yesterday.

Incredible stuff for sure. Not sure why I waited so long to go. Beyond all Boundaries movie was awesome experience.

I advise anyone who has never been to go check it out.

He said it was terrifying, to say the least.

He also told some funny, funny stories from the war. Like the time when they were in India and the king cobra got into their tent. He also told of how some of the natives would run across the runway in the path of landing planes - in order to keep the evil spirits from getting them. Some didn't get across fast enough...

Man, the Japanese were crazy during WWII. Absolutely fanatical. As were the Russians and the Germans. You have to step back and think, "this is how far a man will go to destroy another man." Truly breathtaking in its horror.

Yep. Here's some pictures of what I was talking about....

Japanese school girl's being trained as infantry.

Adult civilians being trained to use bamboo spears

School children (they look about 10 - 12 yrs old to me) being trained to use bamboo spears

Now imagine what would have happened had we actually had to invade and our forces encountered literally tens of thousands of semi-trained women and children charging at them with bamboo spears or other crude weapons. It would have been a massacre on a biblical scale.

This. What a lot don't realize (ie the bleeding hearts) is that the soldier's mindset spilled over into the civilian population. It would have been worse than bad...

Exactly. Just as was the case with the military, the Japanese civilian population regarded their emperor as god... literally. They would have died in the millions for him had Japan not surrendered.

Could you imagine the psychological toll for a US soldier to have to mow down a bunch of women and children with sticks?

Darth, have you seen any casualty estimates had we been forced to invade?

(OT, it looks like I have also gained your down voter...)

I am sure it would have been really, really bad. At least until those women and children started killing US soldiers with said sticks.

Where did you see me "glorify" anything in this thread? I personally think it's terrible what happened to the civilian population of Japan. Their government led them down a road of total destruction by starting a war against he U.S. that Japan never had a prayer of winning. Yes we had to do terrible things to win that war, but responsibility for that rests on the shoulders of men like Hideki Tojo and Emperor Hirohito.

And that is what some don't get - or don't want to see.

I've read they estimated our casualties alone would have been something like 1,000,000 or so. As for the Japanese people, these numbers would have been even worse.

ETA: Fixed typo.

I know! I build 1/48 scale WWII planes and I could only imagine being in the glass tip of the spear with nothing that front row view. I have often thought, after painting my bombardier and gluing him to the seat what that must of been like when under assault.
