Is it excessive to give them a firm slap when they do something wrong? Do you whip them with something?
Do you consider that animal abuse? Just curious

My dog hates the newspaper. I roll it up and tap him with it.

Depends how big and what kind of dog we are talking about.
I'm not going to slap my small 10 lb dog across the room. I will beat the shite out of my two big dogs to where it hurts my hand.

Flip it over on its back.

I take a shite on the floor, and then rub its nose in it.

I've got a 50 lb mutt that I discipline many ways.
If she jumps on someone I/they smack her on the nose.
She hasn't snapped at anyone in 14 months that I've had her but if it happened I slam her mouth shut and pinch her ear.
Always have done this with bigger dogs and they turned out great.
I think the main thing is dont beat them to where it causes physical damage. Just pop with newspaper or something that gets your point across.
Also tone of voice goes a long way. If I tell my dog NO! In a deep tone she immediately lowers her ears and lays at my feet.

My coonhound doesn't respond to getting spanks. Or spray bottles. He HATES when we fuss him and the don't make eye contact with him. He wears a shock collar on walks, so if he disobeys during those, he gets a little voltage
