PFF Stats of Saints, Entire 2014 Season

Well, I think we can all agree that season was infuriating and disappointing.
Not a lot went right, and a whole lot went wrong.
But where did it go wrong?
And are there any reasons to be optimistic?
Let's take a look at individual player performances.
OFFENSE
-Drew Brees' regular season overall score of +32.6 puts him second overall among quarterbacks, behind only Aaron Rodgers. From a statistical standpoint, Brees had an excellent year. However, one can see he threw a lot of ill-timed interceptions (although I question whether there are well-timed interceptions).
-I don't see Brees as the problem, but that's not to say he doesn't have things to work on.
-Our collective pass blocking comes to -34.3, which is terrible. Why even have a HoF quarterback is this is how we're going to protect him?
-Strief continues to be the most underrated player on the team. Armstead seemed a slight bit less impressive than he did his first year, but I think he has a good future.
-We talk a lot about Grubbs and Evans together because it's not clear who is worse. Evans is certainly worse in pass blocking (arguably the more important of the blocking types), but he's better in run blocking.
-For my money, Grubbs is the one to keep. Evans looks done to me, but I've been wrong before.
-Also, Evans' decline in performance is supposedly explained by injury. But why would his pass blocking be affected by injury, but not his run blocking?
-Harris...talk about failed experiment.
-The less that's written about Erik Lorig, the better. Let's all pray for Austin Johnson's speedy recovery.
-Still don't know why Goodwin was given the nod over Lelito. I've asked myself this over and over. To me, Lelito is clearly the one to go with here. Goodwin is over the hill.
-Morgan, I can take him or leave him. Same for Meachem.
-Cooks had a decent year, but I feel like we're not using him properly and he seemed a bit tentative on the field. I need to see him improve a lot between years 1 and 2.
-Want to see more of Stills. He can do it all.
-I like all three of our RB's. They all ran well despite not having a huge amount of carries. I still think Ingram is the superior pure runner compared to Robinson, despite what PFF says here. But we'll see how that goes. I don't think we'll ever be able to replace Thomas' production in the screen game.
-Cadet is...ok, I guess.
-Toon improved as the season went on. I'm hopeful for him. His problems have generally been psychological, and it seems like he got a handle on that as the season wore on.
-Graham...good, but not what we've come to expect. I'm willing to believe the injury excuse for the time being. I thought Hill would break out more.
DEFENSE
-Well, this is ugly. 5 players in the green for a whole season? What the hell happened?
-Right away, I'm most impressed with Junior Gallette, at least in the pass rush game. His antics might be tired and his run blocking might need work, but he's pretty much the only defender to generate any pass rush this season.
-Also, Hicks played better than I gave him credit for. He will probably never be the monster the camp writers love to consider him, but he's a solid player (on the outside anyway).
-Similarly, the player I'm most disappointed with...well, that's a tough one. It's gotta be Cam Jordan. For comparison's sake, Jordan scored a +26.8 overall with a +31.6 pass rush score in 2013. Compare that to his scores above. Imagine the difference that must make with the whole rest of the defense. So what happened?
-Let's take a look at the tackles. It's been hypothesized that our tackles are not eating blocks, making it difficult for our Ends to be effective. Ok, well, J Jenkins and Bunkley sure didn't do us any favors. Man, I hope Jenkins returns to 2013 form.
-There really aren't any linebackers here worth mentioning. Well, Haralson put in another decent showing. Besides him, there's Lofton (actually got worse), Humber (failed experiment), and Hawthorne (looked better, but still sucks). Inexcusable.
-Another mystery. Tyrunn Walker. Why does he only have 306 plays? He is consistently our best DT, but CSP generally doesn't play him. I'm missing something here.
-Wanted to see more out of Foster, frankly.
-Warren is certainly someone to look out for. Dixon, too, honestly.
-Jairus Byrd. I'm willing to forgive his coverage score on the fact that he was playing in the stands, but why is his run defense score in the negative? Why do our players play worse in this defense than in other defenses? Another huge disappointment.
-But not as disappointing as Kenny Vaccaro. Damn, talk about a fall from grace. I believe he had 3 missed tackles all year in 2013. He missed 19 this year. Ugh, what the frick?
-Patrick Robinson, assuming we keep him, impressed me. He got better as the year went on, and I think he's a solid #2 CB. Or slot CB.
-Sunseri didn't really do much, but I like him.
-Even Bush played worse this season. It's like the whole defense said "frick it, I'll get paid regardless."
-If Edabali is the future, he better step up.
-I'm thinking I was wrong about White. I saw potential in him, but damn, he sucked arse this season.
-Lewis' score is a bit low for my perspective, but he play a great deal injured. Of course, with a 97.9 QB rating into his coverage, it's hard to argue with his negative score.
-Not a lot to be optimistic about here. In my opinion, this defense ruins players. How many times will we watch great players become average upon coming to New Orleans or terrible players become awesome upon leaving? The staff is fricked.
In summation, I think we have a talented offense that really just needs to focus on internal protection.
On the other hand, the defense is broken at all three levels. I suppose good coaching and some serious internal pressure could turn things around, but I'm not giving in to the hype machine anymore.

Here are the ST scores if anyone wants to see them.

Thanks Hoodoo.
Yea the offense is MILES closer than the def. We will see what they think of the three in the middle. Can't imagine not having a new center next year at the minimum.
Like you said "what the hell happened?"
I think we were all stunned at the D-lines drop off.
And as I have said before I hate the entire LB corp Parys is OK as a backup but the rest are the worst in the entire NFL.
We need run stuffers at DT so we can get LB'ers that can cover and run sideline to sideline.

As much as I like Cooks, I so, so, so wanted C.J. Mosley.
The dude is the 10th ranked ILB in the league in his first season.
It wouldn't have taken much to move up 3 more spots, and it's not like we did much with our other draft picks.

God no. Its gonna hurt us the next few years. Having to scramble for FA vets to do what those pics were to be doing.
And agree on Cooks. CSP started the year with him all over the place then gave up on it after a few games if I remember that right?

Oh and what do you mean Strief had the second highest grade on offense. He clearly sucks. At least that's what people here say.

But people said that Junior got paid this year and he just stopped performing...

That, by itself, separates him from the rest of the rather languid defense.

I don't get it. The dude is as stalwart a player as we've seen in the last few seasons.

um... I thought Jimmay couldn't run block???

It's like everyone has that image of his injured season burned into their minds and can't move on.
Now I will say he should not be playing LT and going against speed rushers regularly, but he is a more than capable RT.
On Galette it's laughable how stupid the people are that want him gone. Yeah he talks to much and hangs with stupid whores (the second he needs to definitely stop doing), but when it's game time he produces.
And he his run defense will suffer a bit, but that's because it's his job to kill the QB more than anyone else, so sometimes he is caught out of position. He does need to stop overpursuing and how his gap, but with the slow arse LBs we got can you blame him for trying to make a play?

Said this earlier this year. I don't think it was a coincidence we lost the games that he was listed as the starting LT.

Thomas Moorestead remains the second best player on the team.
Posted on 3/4/15 at 2:22 pm to bountyhunter
Yup. It's hard to say he single handedly cost us those games but if Armstead was healthy I think things go much differently.
I had my top four needs last year as Cover LB(didn't even attempt to fix), C(Goodwin wasn't even good as a stop gap), and CB 2(Bailey and Co sucked it up) but I had backup LT pegged as the biggest depth hole by far.
Sad to say that all of those are needs again this year, along with needing a G if Evans isn't healthy/gets cut.
And on Morstead, bunch o' mo rans wanted to cut him because he made too much for a punter. Have we had issues covering punts since we got him? Doesn't he have close to, if not the, best net avg? Thank you and shut the frick up.
I know people like to think we always hit on Oline late but I posted numerous times how untrue that is(with info to back it up). It's time we start going Oline and LB in the first 3 rounds. Heavily invest in what is our biggest weaknesses.

Can you pull the grades of Michael Oher and Byron Bell for me from 2014?
Thanks.
Thanks.

We've missed on enough late round OL.we hit on Evans, Armstead, and strief, but we missed on a lot as well. Nicks was a 1st round player with issues to cause his drop

Yeah on Nicks he was a first round talent with issues. Also a big reason we didn't pay him (thought he would be another Charlie Grant).
Armstead isn't a late round pick (4-7). Evans was still 4th round so late but not that late. Strief was the big find and it took a couple of years to get him in. Bushrod was decent but far from a gem.
And there's are about 6-8 guys we missed between rounds 4-7. Sadly Brown was our highest pick under Payton and he busted out.

Yeah he is a WR period. Sucks as a runner and returner (and blocker). May as well let him go and let our receivers actually play that role, or let the very capable Thomas and Ingram do it.
No reason Cadet should ever see the field.

I think I was the only idiot.
And I said that he would never see the end of his contract without a pay cut and I stand by that. We had the least amount of punts in the NFL I believe.
Has nothing to do with his performance which has always been top notch
