I wouldn't put any kind of minimum on it. If you are playing no-limit then maybe you want to put a maximum on it. If someone wants to play with 20, when everyone else is playing with $100 then they are putting themselves at a huge disadvantage. They will likely keep throwing $20 out until they reach $100 anyway because they are getting eaten up (unless they get lucky very early). So if someone is a idiot and wants to keep donating to the table, then why stop them from doing so?

What would you set the max at with a $100 minimum? I'm thinking $400. Good number?

If I decided to do no minimum what should I set the max at? No limit

There should 100 percent be a table max. You don't want one guy coming in with 200 dollars when everyone else has 30.
Yes, if you are playing no-limit. That's why I suggested limit, with the small amount they will play for. If playing no-limit then set a max, not a min.

In a cash game, I completely disagree. Tournament style, of course. I've never heard a cash game increasing blinds.
Everyone but the one idiot pretty much knocked that idea out the window.

If you think most people will be playing with $100 then I would say $150 max...but allow them to rebuy in (with up to $100 or less)

So a person who wants to take a 30 min break would not be forced to post a blind? You only post blinds if you want to play? May be a stupid question just making sure.
I would say no, just don't let them back in until it's their turn to be the BB

Either that or make them post an additional small blind and big blind if they missed them both. If they want to do it, fine...if not then they just wait till it gets back around to them.
In cash games you don't really have to make them post a big blind or small blind if they are out...in tournaments you do.

If you are doing limit hold em, it really doesn't matter what the max is because you can't bully people around with big chip stacks. If you are doing 1/2 NL, 200 as the max and 20 as the min. 2/5 have 500 max, 40 min. This is how most casinos do it at least. If people want to buy in low and still play, that's fine...they just need to realize what they are up against.
ETA: In cash games, I've never pulled someone's blinds. Let them take a piss break or smoke break. Tournament style, you definitely take the blinds away.

Have you decided on what your blinds will be? I suggest if 1-2 N/L, $200 max buy in, $50 min. Maybe one short buy. There are reasons to have a minimum.
Straddles create action but don't allow unless most want it. Game will run smoother with 1 dealer.

This...but you also can't run into the person who will want to take multiple breaks when it's their turn to post blinds. That's why I said, if they miss a few hands (and skip their blinds) if they want to jump back in before it's time to post again they put a small blind in one hand and a large blind in the next. They do this, then everything is even and they can't get away with skipping blinds. They would be dumb to not just wait till it's back to their blind to play, but to each his own.

Well I never played with douchebags like that thankfully. Either way, we usually let the person sit back down at the position he got up in. If he was under the gun when he got up, he can't sit back down until he's in that same position.
If someone got up on the button, they can sit back down at any point since no other position is more advantageous.

Yeah...another thing is how you separate your chips. How many different colors do you have? If most are buying in at $100 (which seems to be the case) then I would go .50/1 blinds. Then have .50/1/5 chips...or .25/.50/1/5 chips. You can also do .25/.50 blinds if you have 4 colors.
It's just a friendly game, so doing it either way should not be a huge deal. How long you usually play for is another factor. If you want a game that last 2-3 hours, I would go .50 chips as your lowest with .50/1 blinds. If you want a game that last 5-6 hours then .25/.50 will keep everyone around longer.

Don't know if this has been mentioned or not, but if you're not going to rake, then I would suggest taking $5-$10 per player to cover expenses. Beer, liquor, food, etc. Don't run a game and not offer drinks and food. Also start a bad beat pot. Rake a couple of dollars each time you have a pot bigger than $50. If someone gets beat with Kings full of aces or better, they get the bad beat pot.

You missed the post where I said I live in a state where there are no casinos.
I saw it. I was just being a wise arse. That's why I didn't suggest going to a casino and spending 3 or 4 hundred on game chips. I know there are game chips that can be bought at a department store. Casino chips have actual value. If you had 50 cent, $1, $5 and $10 chips it would make for a better game, either way use chips not cash.

No...That's getting too complicated for a small cash game. You are playing no-limit, so chances are if you get beat with a hand that dominant by J/10 you did something wrong in your betting and you deserve to lose. Just my opinion.

I will def save this post when I get ready to set up. I really appreciate the input. I really wasn't expecting to get much help on the OT. You guys surprised me

No problem. You got some good advice here. Just have to make it fit the style of game you want to play. So many different factors go into it, and it all depends on your group of people and how you want to play. If you give more details then you can get more/better advice on how to set it up.

Can someone explain blinds, under the gun and on the button?
Posted on 3/3/15 at 10:23 am to Hold That Tiger 10
NL, 8-10 people, $100 min, leaning towards .50/1 blinds, cheap set of chips I got online years ago (has 5 colors). What details am I missing?
