What would you have the cop do when he sees some douchebag walking down the street with a weapon?
Is it not reasonable to expect law enforcement to make sure he does not pose a danger?

When you entered a frontier town in the west, you were legally required to leave your guns at the stables on the outskirts of town or drop them off with the sheriff, who would give you a token in exchange. The shootout at the OK Corral was technically law enforcement attempting to enforce the ban of no guns in Tombstone.
