Best advice based on your criteria is to wait until the technology develops a little more. Most have to be charged daily, and I am not aware of any that are considered a smartwatch that don't require a phone.
I have a moto 360 and love it, it does a pretty good job of measuring steps, but not as good on the heart rate tracking.

this is what I've come to realize after just researching smart watches after seeing this thread. realized there's nothing out right now that does exactly what I want. although the microsoft band seems to come closest and I may just buy it. love that it comes with gps, has a heart rate monitor, and cortana is integrated into it. wish the heart rate monitor was more accurate and that it integrated more with playing music. of course those could possibly be fixed with an update. so like I said, I may go ahead and buy one

That's kind of what I figured. I might just get a cheap fitness tracker for now until the big brands have time to tinker and improve

I just mean I'd like to leave my phone in the locker at the gym, or just not have to have it in my pocket while working out. So a watch that I can use to scroll thru a playlist real quick would be handy
