I mostly agree with all your points, especially your comment about the in-fighting of Sega of America and Sega of Japan. However...
Additionally, the launch of the Dreamcast was the most successful single day of sales Electronics Boutique ever had in their history at the time. LINK
We did, however, definitely push the PS2 more than other systems, even after the launch of the Xbox and Gamecube. I remember the manager of our store was told by corporate to gut 5 or 6 new PS2 boxes, and stack them together with tape to make a display to put outside our store to let people know we had PS2's in stock. I always felt bad for those customers who'd end up buying one of those gutted PS2's that needed the box from the display. The manager would have to rip the tape off the box and it'd be all beat up looking.
"Here's your brand new PS2 in a box that someone tripped over and spilled Orange Julius on. Enjoy!"

I doubt this because I bought my Dreamcast from Electronics Boutique. I also sold Dreamcast hardware and software while working there myself.
EB Games stopped selling their stuff over it.

I have like 16 consoles now from Atari 2600 to PS3 and Wii U
PS2 is the only one that's ever gone out on me and had to be replaced (never owned any Xbox)

Ahh, I may have gotten the store wrong then. I know there was at least one major retailer that cut bait with them. Maybe it was WalMart? I'm too lazy to use the google machine.
