Would you prefer to go it alone and pile on considerable debt just so if you fail, you will (presumably) fail anonymously? Because realistically speaking, if he is intelligent/successful then he is probably aware at least in some respect of your relative costs, and so therefore he will see you as a success or a failure completely irrespective of your accepting and repaying his loan.

Very well said... That is an option I haven't weighed. Obviously he realizes the risk, but he knows I will be screwing myself if I go the other route. Is a drop in the bucket worth seeing a kid he raised succeed? Idk that's what I'm trying to figure out
