I think the thing that makes them different (and trendier) than trailers is that many of them are self-sustainable with their own power sources like solar panels for electricity. Not really gas generators or relying on power lines to where they're placed.

I would definitely prefer a nice, tiny house in an awesome location with land to explore around me than a huge house with a concrete yard six feet from my neighbors' windows. My husband and I could see ourselves living in something like that one day after kids are grown and on their own.

that and most people are putting really high end finishes on them since the place is so small, they can afford to splurge on things

Yeah, I've got my home on 22 acres. I do think I may eventually add on a room, but haven't decided on that yet. Ideally I'd like an attached greenhouse in the home, but am afraid of the moisture issues. And by attached I mean as part of the actual house, not a separate building or a lean to.

I'll probably eventually put on some sort of living/great room for entertaining. But as of now, I've got plenty of space.

Trailers/mobile homes are built very poorly too. The manufacturers lobby to get the least amount of restrictions on them as possible to pass winds codes and such. It wasn't too long ago that they were still using 2x2 trusses in the roofs with the damn sardine can crimped on metal roofs and no decking.

A tiny house typically follows typical residential construction practices.

I know a couple in their late 20's who quit their jobs in the corporate world and now live in a tiny house in New Mexico. One is a barista at a local coffe place and the other one does work from home stuff. The tiny house is completely paid for and their bills are absurdly low. They don't buy useless stuff to fill a big house. They travel all the time now and i've got to say they appear extremely happy and don't have any stress. It does look appealing to me. I could consider it, I guess, as long as no kids.
