There has to be side plots. As far as I know the screenwriter stuff plays in a little bit at a later time. All these side plots are character development to show the drama of different people with different involvements in the mob. What the frick is it supposed to be? Tony extorting people for 5-6 seasons? There has to be other people that get developed to some degree.

The stuff with Janice ties a lot of how Tony is now based on his life as a child and how Janice was the favorite.

His interactions with Melfi are important as sort of an aside to how Tony is in respect to analyzing how fricked up his own life is.

Maybe it's just not for you. Sopranos and The Wire are, IMO, the best television dramas ever creates but not everyone will like them.

I agree that the side plots can be distracting and not very interesting but the therapy sessions give you perspective on Tony's life further down the road in the show. It's hard to compare Goodfella, Carlito and others to a show with 86 one or two hour episodes. If Henry Hill's life would have been shown as a 90 hour documentary, it would probably have gotten alittle slow too. Im biased I guess cause I watched it in real time on HBO and loved it.
