Just finished Sopranos season 2, I'm done with it.

For a show that's considered the greatest/one of the greatest by many, I think it's overrated. And this comes from someone who loves godfather1/2, goodfellas, Donnie brasco, carlito's way. The show wastes a lot of time of side stories that don't amount to anything. What's the point of Christopher trying to be a screenwriter? Those scenes with Dr. Melfi are unwatchable after the first few sessions. In addition, there are characters who just occupy screen time just to piss you off. Characters like Artie(not believable as a chef), his mooching feminist sister, his spoiled useless 2 kids, Livia the miserable mom.
Seems like one scene, the guys are saying how much they love one another, bust each other's balls, and then one of them gets whacked. Then the pattern repeats.
I was a big fan of furio, but he barely gets on screen. Instead we see tony fight with his wife episode after episode. It gets old.

It is extremely overrated, and a great choice to call it quits.

Tony dies at the end

At the time it was far and away the best thing ever produced for TV but its been surpassed by numerous shows since.
The annoying family and general banalities of day to day life were kind of the point.

I loved the Sopranos. I watched it online about 2-3 years ago. I particularly liked the final season.
That being said, if you don't like it so far, then don't keep watching it. I guess it isn't for you. I can't really understand why someone wouldn't like it, but if you don't. Don't watch it.
I will say that the first episode of season 3 is definitely one of my favorite random episodes throughout the series... but if you didn't like the first two seasons then I don't know what you will like.

There has to be side plots. As far as I know the screenwriter stuff plays in a little bit at a later time. All these side plots are character development to show the drama of different people with different involvements in the mob. What the frick is it supposed to be? Tony extorting people for 5-6 seasons? There has to be other people that get developed to some degree.
The stuff with Janice ties a lot of how Tony is now based on his life as a child and how Janice was the favorite.
His interactions with Melfi are important as sort of an aside to how Tony is in respect to analyzing how fricked up his own life is.

Season 3 is much better than 1 and 2.
New characters are introduced in season 3, most notably Ralph Cifaretto. Plus, Johnny Sack is featured as well.
Give it one more season, man.

I watched the whole series a few months ago. I enjoyed it, but it took me a little while to really get into it. I love how it gets the audience to root for and empathize with Tony, a ruthless mob boss. The character development was pretty good overall. I didn't like what they did with AJ. He just got annoying.
***Spoiler***
And I can't believe they super-imposed Tony's mom into a scene after she passed away IRL. It looked so awful and made no sense. They could have just mentioned her dying and be done with it. The whole scene was pointless.

God Damn Meadow Soprano was my dream girl growing up. so fricking hot.

I would not give up on it, just take a breather. It is a solid series and was ground breaking back in the day.

I'm not a fan of thug life in general. I have seen all the Godfather movies, Casino and Goodfellas and enjoyed them mostly for the fine acting. I can handle the thug scene through a 2 hour movie but it's not something I want to see in a TV series. There's just too much other good TV to watch and not enough time to watch it all.

I did a rewatch last year, and I thought it was pretty tough to finish.
Marathoning the episodes is tough. Everyone and I do mean everyone is despicable.
Carmella with her self-righteous BS all the while taking and loving the MONEY. Janice and Livia.
Christopher and his constant whinning.
Shut up Meadow!
AJ....dear god...AJ!
I loved the show when it first ran. Still like it, but I don't think it is optimal marathon viewing similar to Six Feet Under being hard to marathon.

carlito's way sucks balls, Donnie brasco is meh
it's not romanticized mafia...they love the godfather, goodfellas, but it is a more everyday realistic look at it.
The first 2 seasons are the slowest, but if you're looking at it for one giant story ark instead of enjoying the great characters, performances, writing and direction, then it's not for you
season 3 is where it really hits its stride
SPOILERS
RIP pussy

I watched ita few months back. Kept waiting for it to get better, but for the most part it was just more of the same. Wasn't a bad show by any means, but certainly not GOAT material. And I like "stories" - it's not that I needed car chases or explosions. I rode it out because my wife and I needed something to watch together, but I was more than a bit disappointed. Worth watching, but far short of what I expected given the hype.

You love Carlito's Way and Donnie Brasco but dislike Sopranos? You just have shitty taste. It's okay, you can't help it.

quote:This is where you lost me. Season 1 of The Sopranos - starting with the first scene of the first episode - is some of the best TV you'll ever see. At this point, I don't remember much from season 2 - but if you didn't enjoy season 1, there's not much anyone can do for you.
Those scenes with Dr. Melfi are unwatchable after the first few sessions.

I don't think the show ever attempted to be an 80+ hour Goodfellas - it was a family/workplace dramedy centered around a character that could have been from Goodfellas.

What's the point of Christopher trying to be a screenwriter?
It was an homage to the genre - so many wiseguys out there want to tell their story to Hollywood (risky as that sounds) - conversely, Hollywood types fancy themselves as gangsters.

This is a dramatic technique to allow Tony to talk things out without an inner monologue. The fact that I consider both the actors pretty special allowed me to appreciate it more.
There was also the irony of a mob boss having anxiety attacks. I mean, that's pretty funny and sad at the same time.

Characters like Artie(not believable as a chef)
I disagree - he is the archtype of people "who know people" - around these criminal organizations there are always people orbiting and hanging on. Artie is to illustrate the pros and cons of that.
quote:
his mooching feminist sister
Everybody hates Janice. Everybody hates Skyler - doesn't ruin Breaking Bad.
quote:
his spoiled useless 2 kids
They get better (and worse) - just like life.
quote:
Livia the miserable mom
Great performance by a great actress in her final role of any significance.

You're aware it is a show about the mafia, correct?

Furio was great. I think they struggled with how to use the character, properly. One of the weak points of the show that we didn't get more of him - I'll agree to that.

Yeah - I agree with the poster that believes you may have missed the point entirely.
It's okay. Entertainment is largely subjective. I don't like everything that is super popular or critically acclaimed - I'm not going to think less of you - as The Sopranos are likely not everyone's cup of tea.
In your case, it's unexpected because you like the genre, overall, just not this particular product. Unexpected, but shouldn't be a disaster. You gave it 2 seasons - nobody can say you didn't give it a chance.
Did you like The Shield, by any chance?

There are episodes that involve "side" characters like Artie, or what happens to his restaurant which reminiscent of the Goodfellas restaurant and the mooching sis who ends up whacking a guy who happens to be a rival of Tony, and idk if you reached the episode that Tony offers up revenge for something that happens to Dr. Melfi.
Still, no, IMO its not on the same par as the films you mentioned which stands to reason being a series.
Liked the performances in Donnie Brasco, and Goodfellas of course that was strictly from a favorable "inside" point of view obviously, also liked Casino, but didn't like "Carlito's way" at all.
Oh, as I recall you will see more of Furio in later episodes but no, he doesn't become that I remember, more of a "main" character.
But the Sopranos is more of Jersey Edition of La Mano Nera,(when I was a kid it was called this, meaning "the black hand", and then later La Cosa Nostra (this thing of ours) anyway you have more of Jersey than Napolitan, or Sicilian.
btw, Speaking of Sicilians I wonder if you guys knew of this moment in history:

quote:
New Orleans was also the site of the first major Mafia incident in this country. On October 15, 1890, New Orleans Police Superintendent David Hennessey was murdered execution-style. Hundreds of Sicilians were arrested, and 19 were eventually indicted for the murder. An acquittal generated rumors of widespread bribery and intimidated witnesses. Outraged citizens of New Orleans organized a lynch mob and killed 11 of the 19 defendants. Two were hanged, nine were shot, and the remaining eight escaped.
