Malik Newman would have been the difference - Selling point

JJ need to let him know that he would make a diff. Does he need to be one of them (kentucky) or be the one?

He wouldn't be the one here either. We've already got the one, his name is Benny.

How about this as a selling point, LSU had guys playing 39, 38, and 37 minutes while UK had nobody over 30. Johnny lets his horses run.

I think that's a good point and it's not just horses he would be running with, it's thoroughbreds

I'd love for him to come here, but LSU's backcourt will be crowded next season (that's not a bad thing) Quarterman and Hornsby have earned big minutes with their play this year. Plus, there's no substitute for experience. They will be a Jr. and Sr. respectively. No way you can justify not playing each at least 25+ minutes. Patterson has also earned a much bigger role with his play and you would think that he is only going to get better. Throw in Blakeny and Gray (who despite a lot of poor decisions still has ability) and you've got a lot of guys trying to split only so many minutes. Assuming the Harrison twins leave along with possibly Booker and Ulis, there may be more opportunity for a guard at UK.
LSU's biggest selling point is despite all of the sloppiness and frustration that comes with it, they aren't afraid to let their horses run. It's a fun way to play

You think Newman is afraid of these guys? You don't not take Newman because you have Quarterman and Hornsby for Christs sake. It's JJ's job to get the best players to LSU to win games. Not let a talent like Newman get away because of a crowded back court with Quarterman and Hornsby. What a joke.

I agree. If you want to come compete with the best, come to LSU. Duke, NC, and Kentucky have 5 star player though out their teams. If Newman goes to Kentucky, I promise you, his competition will be another 5 star. Just ask the Booker kid who is a 5 star behind the Harrision twins.

LSU's biggest problem is lack of depth and quality at the guard and small forward positions. There are plenty of minutes available for someone who can play any of those positions. While Hornsby and Quarterman have made substantial contributions to LSU's basketball team this season, they both have limits to their games. They would be valuable coming off the bench, but more complete players in the starting roles would be beneficial to the team.

Yea, hate to be the one to break this to you but this is the last level of competition before you are paid millions to play. They won't be handing out any participation awards at season's end and the best player will play regardless of what they've done in years prior. Should we tell Benny "Look man Darcy appeared to be capable of tying his shoes by the end of the '15 season so we are going to go ahead and let you two split time this year. Cool?"...

I agree. But TQ and Hornsby will be experienced guys who have proven that they can put up numbers at the college level. For as talented as Newman is expected to be, he still hasn't proven anything at the college level. Certainly if Newman is on the team you get him in the game, but most coaches would be reluctant to take guys who you KNOW can produce off the court for long stretches in favor of guys who you THINK can produce. The Malone analogy is stupid because unlike Horsby and TQ, Malone hasn't shown that he can do much at the college level. Newman would be in a spot where he would have to prove that he can consistently give you more than Hornsby/Quarterman. If he does, then he should be the starter

If he goes to UK or Kansas he is starting. But if he comes to LSU you "get him in the game" because you know Hornsby or TQ can contribute? If only Cal and Self knew how to evaluate talent.
If it wasn't for the one and done rule this kid would be a lottery pick. But you're reluctant because he hasn't proven anything in college and Hornsby and TQ have? Actually, what have they proven? That they're better than the other guys on the bench?
C'mon man...Hornsby and TQ are solid college ball players. They're not game or program changers like Newman is. There is a reason no one is saying, " man with Benny and Blakeney next year, if only we can get QT back we'll be unstoppable." But you add Newman to the mix and you're talking Final 4 good.

Certainly would be a strong argument

A big part of the reason he would start is because there would be a void left at those schools by guards who have gone to the NBA. It would be as much out of necessity as it is the fact that he is projected to be a great player. At LSU you would have two guards that have proven they can give you 13 and 12 a night in sEC play. If he can equal that or give you better, then no question he's your starter. But as far as coming into a situation where you know you will be the starter and always play big minutes, UK and KU are better because he will HAVE to be the guy to take those minutes.
Martin was a McDonald's All American coming into last season, but you saw several occasions where Jones played Coleman more because he knew what Coleman brought to the table. I'm not saying that LSU shouldn't do everything they can to get him. I'm just saying that UK or KU might be a better spot for him because he knows he has to replace starters who have moved on at those schools. LSU doesn't HAVE to have him replace their productive starters who have moved on.

Thanks for everyone in the crowd for making the atmosphere electric!!!! Maybe that will show him what the PMAC could be like every home game next year if he comes!!!

Simmons and Blakeney are starters from day one. They are polished and focused. Best pair in one class since Henderson and Livingston.

I think Bridge would be gone before Epps.

There's three issues: 1. Does he want to play with another dominant sg like Blakeney who will also need shots especially in late game situations. 2. Who will handle the point? If he thinks he's a better pg than the guy that will be playing that role for us next year then we're out. 3. Who's playing the post next season? If Mickey doesn't come back we have no shot. Newman and his handlers seem like very smart people. They knew what was up before the game. We have a much better shot than people think imo, because they respect Ben and Blakeney so much. But we have to show him we have the components and the coaching which I think we've done.
