I have a Lie-Nielsen #4 but it isn't brass. That thing there is fine.
I absolutely love working with my planes. I have a bunch. From 3s up to 8 and several block planes.
If you use them right, you don't even need to think about sanding.
My small Lie-Nielsen brass block plane is used on absolutely every project I work on.
How do you sharpen your's? I have some water stones but really have gotten to where I prefer wet-dry sand paper down to 2000. Put them on a granite block.

Never stand a wood plan on the knife like you have in that picture. Always lay it on it's side. That is why they come in a box on their side. You dulling the knife.
