OK, I know you didn't say this, but before the 'stars don't matter' guys come in...
They do matter.
They do matter.

So quick to bash.
Not trying to make any statement on stars or rankings or what does and doesn't matter. I just think its cool to see who pans out. Thought the recruiting board of all places would enjoy

I wasn't bashing. In fact I stated this

Believe it or not the goal of recruiting is to win games in college. Everything gets shuffled again in college. I think I would be perfectly happy if LSU won the NC every year, but never sent one single player to the NFL.

Well these stars are based on how they think these players are ranked headed into COLLEGE. Alot changes between then and the NFL.

this is so stupid the sheer numbers of 3 stars compared to 4 stars compared ultimately to 5 stars. There is only a select sample of 5 stars that make it so just by numbers alone this makes perfect sense

That's why more 3 and 4 starts make it in the NFL. There's a much bigger pool of player to potentially become super stars.

The dead horse beaten again......
1) more 5 stars (by percentage) are in league than 4 stars, more 4 than 3, and so on..... (By percentage). However there are a lot of 3 stars in league because out of the hundreds or so of 3 stars if only 5% make it that is more than all of the 5 stars.
2) 5 stars have more raw ability, so you have a better chance of making a great player. The old can't make chicken salad out of chicken s-"* adage.... But even if you start with chicken it still takes effort to make the salad in that analogy
3) there are always exceptions where kids are underrated
All this to say the obvious. Given a choice between a 5 star or a 4 star you always want the 5, unless there is a huge compelling reason to take 4 over 5 (like 5 star just got arrested for a string of felonies)

To properly address the question "do stars matter?" you would need to do something like--what % of 5 stars are NFL starters vs 4 stars vs 3 stars etc?
I have never put much credence in 5 star vs 4 star. LSU history has lots of empirical reasons not to. But if you wanna challenge for the championship, it seems your average ranking needs to be pretty high.

it has been done and, by percentage, there are more 5 stars that make it than others. More 4s than 3s and so on.

1 principle or dynamic that gets lost in this discussion is that the ideal college player isn't the ideal NFL player. Charlie Ward, Tebow, Couch, Crouch, etc. If you could have college Peyton Manning or college Tebow, who would you pick? The NFL versions are easy but not the college versions.

I don't know if the OP was trying to make a point but I thought it was interesting.
If the question is do *s matter it would be yes, but raw talent still must be developed through good coaching and the desire of the individual.

Its mildly comfurting that the Tackles arent any better than a 3 Star.

True, and I think a lot of 4 & 5 star players can be very good, or say, All-Conference, maybe even All-American in college, but their game just doesn't translate to the pros.
