How would an app know what sleep cycle you are in? It is arbitrary duration settings?

Unless it attaches to you it wouldn't. OP was experiencing the placebo effect, that's it.

It's supposed to use your body's movements with the gyroscope to estimate which stage of the sleep cycle you're in. I like to use OP's app. Kind of cool to see the charts afterwards.

The app doesn't know what cycle you're in. It is designed from knowledge of typical sleep patterns in that you go in and out of deep sleep and your level of consciousness is greater the further you are from deep sleep. You can adjust the length of the alarm.

My current profile is set to 5 min Fade-in and 10 min of alarm at 70% volume. It also turns on the display at the alarm time after fade in to 50% brightness
