Should be?

How's it any different than guarding the lines, middle infielders playing for the double play, and outfielders playing deep/shallow or shading pull/opposite field hitters?

All of those things make pitchers better than they "should be", and this one is literally no different. I know you're playing devil's advocate, but it just didn't make sense IMO.

those are all seven fielders in natural positions... that's different
