Maybe they didn't mean powerful in heat, but in flavor. It packs a lot of flavor and can overwhelm a dish.
Was going to post this. Sriracha can definitely overpower everything else in a dish, with only using a small amount.

The Chopped judges are kind of wusses on spice. That said, I often take it easy on sriracha. I prefer my pho to taste of the broth and not overpowered by pepper/garlic.
But it makes a killer wing sauce mixed with lime juice, cilantro, and butter.

sriracha kinda sucks. not a very universal like a real hot sauce (pepper, vinegar, salt)

I think there's a certain threshold. Just a little, is not the hottest thing there is. But if you happen to get a big bite, it will wreck your world.

The contestant should have told the judge if they didn't want it to be pronounced in the dish, they shouldn't have put it in the basket.
How many times has a contestant been criticized when a basket ingredient was only an afterthought or background component of the dish?

Zakarian is a wimp sometimes. Sriacha isn't hot at all. Strong flavor overall though.
Good site. We keep this at work:
It's actually pretty good stuff.

You can find the heat level of a lot of sauces here:

Sriracha is 2200 on the Scoville scale, Tabasco 2500
