See that's a limited perspective. The cost of attending college is not just limited to room and board. You have to factor in food expenses, gas, various school supplies, etc.
This is a good move, though I don't see any scenario that would truly pay the athletes (football mostly) what they were worth to the University as a whole.

Most of the full ride scholarships include meal plans, on campus housing (which means they don't need gas) and books.
ETA: I understand that there is still a difference but I don't think it will be that much. Unfortunately, for some athletic programs that are already in the red as it is, this could lead to more non revenue sports being cut.

Only one of these things isn't covered, gas.
You can't tell me that these guys can't get food or school supplies with their scholarships on campus.
Having to stay on campus for all of these things is less than ideal, but it's a choice they made on their way to becoming millionaires. Small price to pay for world class training, facilities and coaching to help you earn 7 figures a year at age 20-22. Poor kids

And don't sit there and act like these guys are starving and walking around without shoes. They are being taken care of.

Meals or a meal plan are already provided to scholarship athletes
Gas? That is not a necessity. And we got travel stipends for Thanksgiving/Christmas.

The only problem I see is that cost of living is diff everywhere. For example, are schools in Cali going to be able to give more than southern schools?
Also I like the 4 year scholly. But hopefully if a kid doesn't live up to his end of the deal it can be revoked. Not just breaking the law, but if he just misses practice and meetings, stuff like that.

They should buy them insurance policies against injuries and put the rest in trust funds until their college careers are over.
