Chavis' read and react defense worked well

I hated it. Our defenses in 03 & 07 were aggressive and dominant. I fricking hate losing games on a late drive. I also blame much of that on Miles. His style tends to lead to us playing down to our competition. I enjoyed seeing offenses moving backwards at the end of our games. Steele got it right when he answered the "scheme question" by stating that you have to create negative plays and prevent the big play. We will see if he brings that back to LSU. The critical requirement is having studs at the 3rd level and he's got (2 deep) NFL talent in that department.

Chavis is a solid DC in the right system. He will have to change if he wants to have the same success as he's had at Tenn & LSU. His D will be on the field longer which typically results in more plays and yards. He really doesn't have to field a Top 20 D for aTm to be successful. That said, he does have to stop the opposing offense in critical situations and that was a problem at LSU.

I think you found the words to express what I loved about the 2003 Saban D. Going backwards at the end of the games.
