Continuing the Ohio St. theme: Tressel's legacy to OSU fans?

How do OSU fans regard Tressel now that he's been gone a few years?
The guy dominated the Big 10, owned Michigan, won the NC in dramatic fashion against one of the GOAT teams in only his second yr, perennial top 5 or 10 finishes, 4-3 in BCS games, ended his career with BCS wins over Oregon and Arky (getting the SEC/speed monkey off his back).
He was also pretty conservative, which seemed to cost OSU several games they could've won. Things seemingly got stale, even though his record was great start to finish.
He left unceremoniously, but OSU managed to get the one attainable coach better than him. Things obviously ended well regardless.
Also, how would you react if, when eligible, he were to go to a Big 10 rival like Nebraska?

I still love the guy. I wouldn't want to see him coach at another B1G school, but also don't think he ever will. He's got a good gig right now and is getting up there in age.

Everyone still loves Tressel for the most part. Shouldn't have happened and that is partially his fault. Him being so conservative was annoying, but he would definitely surprise you like he did 4th and 1 against purdue in 2001.
He was a great coach, but could not hold Urban's jock with ruthless recruiting. Tressel could recruit, look at Pryor, but Urban is on another level.
I don't think Tressel would actually go to a team that played Ohio State. He isn't that kind of guy and has that kind of respect for more than just Ohio State, but the state of Ohio.

Some coaches are effective because they understand football at a different level and are able to out coach the majority of their opponents.
Some coaches are effective because they genuinely care about their players, therefore getting said players to give their all every Saturday.
Tressel, in my opinion, is that special coach that embodies both of those qualities. I have more respect for Jim Tressel than any other living coach, even taking into account the violations he committed. Of course, I even give him credit for not trying to drag down the OSU administration when they threw him under the bus.

Still love him. Think Urban is better, but Tressel will likely still go down as my favorite coach of all time.

I like the way he put this. Tressel was a one-of-a-kind guy. All you had to do was watch that Maurice Clarett 30 for 30.
People put him down for the whole tattoo-gate scandal. He did violate the rules and did something wrong, but he was trying to protect his players and that was his priority. Players loved him and he loved them and it definitely showed.

I love Tress and the legacy he left. One of the best coaches in the history of a storied program.
People will focus on the ending but it is what it is, and it cost him his job.
ETA: Getting urban as a replacement definitely softens the blow of the whole tattoo scandal though.

Safe to say he's No 2 after Hayes at OSU?

I think this is overblown. He was conservative when he had mediocre quarterback play.

As of now; yeah it is safe to say that. Anything to clean up that shite-stain Cooper(won 7 conference ships but still).
Urban can get there if he coaches Ohio State another 5 years or more. Longevity is the issue with him.
Weird thing is that I don't even know if it is possible for Urban to surpass Woody. Woody is a legendary myth at this point. I am too young for Woody, but I don't see anyone passing him no matter what. Woody is like a mythical creature to Ohio State fans. There are just so many stories and so much hatred for Michigan in that man that he might just be the Ohio State guy and you can't overcome that.

Well my screen name gives you an idea of how I feel about him, although he lost some cred in my mind for lying to the NCAA. The violations were mild but he deserved what he got for what he did. Still have a ton of respect for him and he is held in very high regard by a lot of Buckeye Nation. Does quite a bit of charity work and public speaking on his dime.

in general, he was pretty conservative. Ironically, i think it was an aggressive play call that cost him that game against texas in 2005. with a few minutes left, he opted to kick a 53 yard field goal. the way his defense was dominating, i thought they would be better off punting. they missed the field goal, lose momentum and texas gets excellent field position and drives for a TD.

Wrong it that TE that dropped the TD pass that cost OSU the game. If that TE held on, the game was over.

Tough to say. With Meyer Ohio State has a big 3 of coaching and that doesn't take into account the fact that Paul Brown was the head coach there for a short time.

I have ultimate respect for Tressel as a coach. I lost a lost of respect for him as a person with the way things ended.
If you are going to preach character, honesty and integrity you'd best live it and at a crucial moment he chose not to.

I agree that was killer, but the hamby play was with 5 min left in the 3rd quarter and would have just made it a 10 point game. Ohio state was still in position to win and their defense was dominating, I think that really long fg was the wrong choice and gave momentum back to Texas.
