Steele and Coach O are as good of hires possible for LSU at this point in time

Everyone knows Les only has a few years left.
The competiveness trend line for LSU is not heading upward.
LSU desperately needs a QB coach.
LSU desperately needs a clock management assistant.
Proven/up and coming D coordinators are not going to come to a place facing these issues.
That leaves the pool of candidates to those either losing their job this year, those with a laundry list of experience dating to the 80's which a couple down years at LSU won't hurt their resume, those out of football last year, or those with head coaching aspirations when Miles does get the boot/leave.
Please temper expectations, generally speaking defense has not been the problem.
We'll be lucky of Steele/O can put a comparable defense on the field to what Chavis did. Assuming they can, can Steele and Orgeron help with our real problems?

I understand your point, but prepare yourself for a lot of downvotes.

I'll say this, they went from about a 6 or 7 in recruiting with Chavis and Brick, to a 10 with Orgeron and Steele

Player talent has not been the issue and you know it. No need to hang your hat on that.

Uncertainty about CLM's future is the only compelling argument you have (though that could go the other way for a competent and ambitious coordinator).
The rest is hogwash. Why wouldn't a good DC want to coach the talent we bring in here. Chavis has been able to field strong, nationally ranked units through some of the worst offensive production in FBS football.

Why don't you and LSU focus on this?
Hell Chavis said it himself. Paraphrasing here, but it's nice to go to a place with an offense.

You can't be serious. Both those guys were highly rated recruits. You can't tell me that Urban Meyer, Hugh, Gus, etc.. Couldn't have coach those boys better.
Hell Urban did it with 3rd stringer and Gus has been doingn it with a WR.
I really can't believe you think its the kids fault here.

OK, i'll buy that. but I also feel that we now have a chance at fielding a BETTER defense. let's face it, chavis' D got old and the opposing OC's knew how to defeat it, esp with their 2 minute offenses. notre dame had zero problem with a chavis defense; Kelly KNEW to start his running QB and, once again, chavis was ineffective in stopping it.

Yeah, the 10 yard pass to the wide open fullback could have been coached better.

Players make mistakes and sometimes cost you the game, but one thing that better damn sure not happen is a GD coach costing you the game.
Happens all the time with clock management and its apparent our QBs are not prepared. That is coaches costing us games.

...but talent evaluation has been an issue. Especially at DL & LB.

quote:It has been the past 2 years. Welter started for a year and a half while we waited for Beckwith to develop, because there was nobody else able to play. We started freshmen on the D line because we missed on several other D linemen the past couple years. If there had been some depth at line, Godchaux wouldn't have been so needed.
