After a few hours to rest on the Steele hire, I like it. I dont love it, but I like it. he is a GREAT recruiter and a very good teacher. The Bama fans I know and have talked to since last night both thought that should Smart move on, Steele would have been their fronrtunner for DC and he was HIGHLY coveted by Saban. His specialty is LBs, which has been the "weak spot" on LSUs defense. Now, you add BeBe to focus on the DL whiile Steele focuses on the back end (LBs and DBs). My fear is that the two best DCs under Miles were Pelini and Chavis, guys that did it all on the defensive side of the ball but neither were the recruiter that Steele is. With Steele, Wilson and Orgeron you have three former national recruiters o the year. You want to dominate recruiting, they should now. Consider the fence put up. The other thing I like abot him, unlike Kirby Smart he won't be using thie LSU job to immediately start looking for something better. Smart wants out at Bama soley so he can start looking on a head coaching gig....no Smart is no Bud Foster or John Chavis (career DC) but he can really be committed to the program and sell himself and LSU to recruits. With Smart, everyone knows it would have been empty promises and would have been used against LSU in recruiting. Ultimately, I take the wait and see approach...I don't love it, but I like it and I can certainly see how it will work with the caveat that someone has to be THE GUY. Steele hasn't proven in the past he can be that guy, but if he will be able to do it anywhere; this has him set up to succeed.
3 former national recruiters of the year has to be unparalleled in College Football. Think of how good it was BEFORE Orgeron and Steele. Now, add them and take away Steele (their best recruiter) from Bama. Today is a good day for LSU.
