Also force fetch done without rock solid OB which many amateurs don't establish is a set up for disaster. Force fetch in my opinion is the single most important part of training a great dog. Can a dog be trained without it sure, but it fixes so many problems it's amazing.
For the OP You have to decide what you want out of your dog and how much time you want to spend getting there. You can overcome your issue without Force fetch.

I once read (may have been in Wolters's book) that "A retriever retrieves because it's in his blood BUT when you force fetch them they are doing it out of a command and are more obedient overall for it, in the end.
