My wife used to sponsor one through Worldvision. It seemed legit, but I didn't do any research. They did sell our info to telemarketers, and still try to hit us up for cash at least once a week, 5 years later.

I used to sponsor a child in Kenya through Food for the Hungry. It's the organization I worked with when I went to Kenya with a church I used to belong to back in 2007. So I saw for myself just where the money went and can say they are a legit organization. Also got to meet my sponsorchild and work with FHI workers in Kenya. His village is doing so well now from all the help FHI gave them...they no longer need sponsorship. Wrote my last letter to him several months ago and received a farewall letter from him. Was kinda bittersweet.

I've done a little research and it looks like a few show a non-profit % at 85% or better which seems decent for that type of charity. I had a friend in high school sponsor a kid back then and that kid just graduated college. They still keep in touch and send family pics and such. Seems like a cool way to help someone if its legit.

I've sponsored thru several org. over the years. For me I like the Compassion International model. I get to write my kids and receive letters and pictures from them. It's very rewarding and with effort on your part they become part of your life. I grew up on a livestock farm and really connect with the rural African kids, esp. Ugandan and Rwandan, that have cows, goats, pigs, sheep, and chickens as a big part of their life and sustenance. I highly recommend sponsorship.

We have sponsored a child in Haiti for years, thru Northwest Haiti Christian Mission, nwhcm.org.

We get updates and items made by the child. Very nice, and very worthy. Congrats for considering doing this.

My parents did it when I was a kid, for a few years through Save the Children. The kid would write them letters and draw pictures and stuff. Then one day my parents just stopped sponsoring the kid so I have no idea what happened to him.

My parents sponsored a kid named Raj from India through our local church was I was young. They sent us a picture and he would write them a letter in English a couple times a year. This lasted about 3 years. Last letter we received he wrote his father had "expired" and he had to go work in the local factory to support his mother and sisters. Kid was 11.

Parents called to see his they could sponsor the whole family, but the organization said it didn't work that way. They didn't get another kid to sponsor.

We started one through compassion last year but it's mainly been just the monthly money so far. Looking forward to sending letters etc soon with our son now that he's old enough to know what's up.

We sponsor a child through Unbound. Been doing it for years. She's in Honduras and writes my daughter frequently.

Yes we do it as a family and have been truly blessed by it all. We sponsor a family in Africa and one in Armenia. The children write us letters with photos through WORLD VISION. World Vision is awesome and 100% goes to the families. We sent extra fro Christmas and got back a letter that would bring tears to a grown man's eyes - they used the extra to help get some tin to fix the leaking roof. World Vision does it right and I highly recommend. Teaches kids to be thankful and have some humility.

No idea. I guess that's why they stopped giving to that charity.

I remember we could send them gifts and we sent him a soccer ball for Chirstmas once. Poor Raj. Dude is probably working in some asbestos factory.

World Vision has never once hit us up for cash after 7 years. I am not sure what happened with your experience, but ours is totally different. We do receive donation cards via mail but have never received a phone call from them or a telemarketer related in any way to them.

Are you still donating? They didn't start hitting us up until we stopped.
