I have no idea is there's an ounce of validity to either possibility. But for the first time, I think Monty (and maybe Dell) may be in genuine trouble with ownership if the Pelicans screw the pooch in January.
I've always been perplexed at the degree some people write off Dumars. The guy made a terrific team out of the Pistons in the early to mid-2000's with some pretty savvy moves. Things did eventually go south for him. Honestly, though, the guy has proved he can do the job. Plus he went to high school in Natchitoches. Winner!
Avery is a puzzler to me. I'd hate to think he's the best we can do. HOWEVER, he damned sure has accomplished more than Monty (and I've been one to give Monty a lot of time). I'm really not sure you can use the Nets as the definitive measure of his coaching.
I'm not on the bandwagon for either guy, but I have to say they'd at least shake things up and bring some excitement. Absent a win streak in January, I'm ready for just about anything.

I've been on the give Monty/Demps time train for a while but I think its time to move on.

At the very least the owner and his wife selecting both because they're likable locals seems like a horrible idea. The next GM should pick the coach, and looking at Dumars track record, he's mostly had success with coaching lifers and gotten burned every time he went with recent former players. Maybe they know each other and like each other, but on the surface Avery doesn't seem like a guy Dumars would/should go with.

Joe Dumars should be known largely for 2 things-
-winning a championship in a professional sport that has seen only a limited number of franchises achieve this. Not to mention that they were a Rasheed Wallace brain fart from going back to back.
-Dumars is one of the most respected people in the nba. Players and coaches LOVE playing for him.
His time in Detroit had come and gone. He was growing stale, and some of his moves reeked of desperation. No one mentioned it yet in this thread, but he was also financially handicapped during the Pistons recent down period due to the death of Bill Davidson.
If in the right situation, he has proven that he can be a GREAT GM.
