"It's kind of changed," he said about his previous ranking of favorite schools, which was, in order, Ole Miss, LSU, and Mississippi State. "Coach Chavis just left LSU and you know coach Collins left Mississippi State, so that kind of took a big blow on me. I just dropped all three of my officials, so I'm going to check another few schools out."

This is why you don't go to schools because of the coaches. Assistant coaches leave schools every couple of years for the most part. I think that the LB coaches at his top schools Ole Miss, MSU, and LSU are now gone. He was once committed to Bama, right? And Steele is looking to move too. So Lewis then looks at other schools and signs with one whose coach will probably leave next year.

With all due respect, this is bullshite. You pick a school based off RELATIONSHIPS, one of the most important being the relationship between you and your position coach. That's the coach you'll be spending the most time with once on campus. Obviously a recruit needs to feel comfortable with the head coach and current players as well.

Guys the truth lies somewhere in the middle. The relationships are key no doubt, but to ignore that turnover of asst coaches over a 4 year period rarely happens is wrong.
Players are attracted to schools for coaches & relations built but the reputation of the school/program should weigh heavily as well

Its not bullshite. Important, yes. What happened to Ugo Amadi should be a lesson to all recruits every where in college football. Amadi commits and Chavis leaves the very next day! When asked, he had absolutely no idea that Chavis was leaving, to the point of saying something to the effect that why would he recruit me so hard only to not be around to coach me.
Relationships with position and head coaches are very very important. However, if my child were an athlete choosing a school, I would tell my child to be comfortable with everything surrounding the SCHOOL. Coaches, academics, location, distance from home, weather, etc. Choosing a school because of a position or head coach is setting yourself up for a possible disappointment if/when those coaches leave.

You do this and you end up being a journeyman player transferring whenever that coach leaves or you end up unhappy because your only reason for picking the school is now gone. As a recruit, you have to realize that the coaches that are recruiting you are only salesman for their program. Most of the time, the coach assigned to you does not even coach the position you play. As a recruit, you need to make the decision on what the school offers you to make you grow as a man, student, and player to prepare you for the rest of your life. You don't make a decision because the assistant that is recruiting you is cool.

Actually most do go to schools because of the coaches.

Tyron picked LSU for several reasons and one was the relationship that he has with Frank (Wilson) and Adam Henry,” said a source familiar with his recruitment. “Those two did a great job of recruiting him and making him feel wanted.
