Apparently Chief wanted loyalty to the school and not the coach. He got burned by TN when Fulmer was canned. If Alleva lost one of the top Defensive Coordinators in college football for this goofy "what if" scenario then he is a fool.
Get him signed and work thru it with Chief of Miles does leave.

he got burned just like any assistant coach gets burned when the head coach is shown the door. schools do not hire new head coaches and then tell them they have to keep the other coaches still under contract. no head coach would agree to a deal where they weren't given the freedom to select their own staff. regardless, doubt chavis would have stayed even if offered by kiffin. he wasn't going to stay without fulmer

You do realize this is the exception rather than the rule, right?
You're a head coach with a certain philosophy, but you cant hire your own coordinators to align with that philosophy? I mean, why don't we just give him a clause that says the head coach can't fire him?
I'm no fan of Alleva, but if this is true, then I support his decision not to budge.
