Around here, I think it has the most to do with age.

Every year, a new flock of topwaters turn 16, get that silveraydo with lightbar and starts hitting the ponds.

A couple years of 3 and 30 would have a lot of the top waters back to chasing deer.

I think Pop hit the nail on the head. These young kids get there new toys and gotta go try 'em out. This also has to do with the higher incomes that people have. More and better boats, and 4wheelers out there than I can remember from when I was a kid.
Social media can also be to "blame." Pics of people with piles of birds can't help but make it look easy.
You also have to admit that duck hunting is just more fun than about any other hunting. You get to stand around bullshitting with your buds, make hella noise, cook in the blind, play in the mud and still kill stuff from time to time.
