Doesn't have nearly the kick as a single shot. If your dead set on a semi auto - I think remington makes a youth model 1100 but your going to pay out your arse for it.

May have a little more mass, but the difference in felt recoil is minimal, you're still taking the whole kick in one moment. without moving the budget up to buy a semi, the other option is to put a big recoil pad on the stock. I don't know how much those really help.
Seasons almost over, maybe wait til next year and he may be able to handle something a little bigger?
