I woke this morning and watched the last twenty minutes of Apocalypse Now.

Its been seven or eight years since I have seen this movie, and i since started studying photography. I never realized how spectacular the cinematography is during the scene of the assassination of Col Kurtz.

The extreme harshness of the contrast of shadow and light is amazing.

I always wondered how much of this is the cinematographer, not the director.

Does the director tell the cinematographer what he wants, or is it left up to the artwork of the photographer?

According to the internet, Coppola gave Vittorio Storaro free reign for the film's cinematography.

Everything about that movie is amazing. The director is behind a screen with the cinematographer during filming telling him how he wants it... The cinematographer then adjusts it different ways & the director gives it the ok... Or chooses, which he likes best.

It all started with the first scene of The Godfather.
