I figure UK is in a league of their own with us fla and arky behind them. But what about the rest? Has anyone seen other mid tier teams play? I've seen UT play some and Vandy and they both look tough. Any insight on other teams?

Ole Miss is average and lost to a bad mid-major at home. overall not a good team
MSU is terrible
Mizzou is dumpster fire
Alabama is average to below average
UF has been a disappointment thus far. They just got a mid semester transfer eligible and will get better
UK is a friggin beast
aTm is average to below avg
S. Car is imporved (average)
Vandy is down by their standards
Auburn is garbage
UGA is pretty decent---NIT worthy
UT is inconsistent. depends on how they play on each given night. could be an NCAA team or NIT depending on how they develop. They are alot like LSU in that regard
thats all I got

South Carolina is the team I think might be the surprise of the sec this year

Beat Creighton and Oregon on the road though so be careful.

Think they were a contender for NCAA before Thornton got hurt.

They'll be in the dance come March.
Agree with you 100% on all the others.

I watched Vandy beat Purdue the other night, not saying they are great, but not bad...very young and they were at home. LSU, Arkansas, UF, OM, UK, VU, and TAM, are the teams I've seen so far. Well I didn't add much, guess I'm still watching and into football.

I've watched a bunch of the other teams, none impress other than UK obviously.
as a LSU fans, I have a hard time saying LSU can't finish second in the conference this year

I still think Florida is 2, they've just played a much tougher OOC than anyone else to this point.
But I don't see anyone else that LSU could not compete with day in and day out if they played their best and LSU played their best.
Question is who can get their teams to play their best more consistently?

UK is alone at the top. Could be one of the best defensive teams ever
UF is struggling a bit, but they still have the best coach in the league. Still a minimum 10 win SEC team.
Bama is much improved from last year. Right now they are the 3rd best SEC team IMO.
Ark and LSU are a lot alike. Talented but can be very inconsistent. Can beat or lose to anyone in the league.
UGA - experienced. Seem to be more effective against SEC teams than OOC teams
A&M better than last season; same with USC
Vandy - always well coached, but probably a year away from really competing
Ole Miss, AU and UT. - will win some games they're not supposed to, but still in the bottom half of the league
MSU and Mizzou - cellar dwellers

South Carolina beat Clemson by 23 points last night. LSU lost to Clemson.

It goes without saying that Kentucky is far away the best in the league, and the country. I still think Florida will be second best as they get healthy and mesh. I think the group after those two includes LSU, Alabama, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Georgia and South Carolina. All of those teams have some good qualities, and frankly they all probably have more flaws than those good qualities. South Carolina is going to have it's best team in years. Alabama (although still mind-blowingly frustrating for me) and Arkansas are both improved. Ole Miss has a couple of nice wins already out of conference. The SEC is better than it has been in recent years, but that's not saying much and it's still a 4-bid league at best IMO. The OOC schedule and what teams do when they get their shots at UK and maybe Florida will determine who gets those bids, and how many there are. We've seen in recent years it really doesn't matter where you finish in the standings in a weak league.

IMHO we are all grossly underestimating this teams ability.
We play Kentucky at home don't be surprised if we upset them.
I'm not saying we are as good as Kentucky
But we are a very good team !
Wow what a job Johny Jones has done what a great coach!

I think the way we played early led some folks to underestimate us. We played poorly by most any standard.
We've played closer to the way we should be the last 4 games. I still think we can play even better...we're still sloppy and make a lot of curious decisions.
This team could reasonably finish 3rd in the conference if they stay healthy and play to their capability.

I think that the clemson lost is the exeception and not the rule. Keith wasnt balling early in the year like he is right now he's a big factor.

I think that tournament as a whole was a big disappointment. I don't think it unreasonable to expect LSU could have one that thing given the quality of competition.
But the WVU win very nearly made up for that, and now we need to hold serve. Still not much margin for error left given the state of the conference.
Any unexpected losses probably have to be balanced by winning a game we were maybe not supposed to for the rest of the year to get where we want this team to be, and I would say we should expect them to be this year...which is in the NCAA tournament.

You're right. It's like I said, NCAA bids for the SEC will be determined by the OOC and what you do against Kentucky and Florida (if they improve to where they should be, and I think they will). There's just not many chances for quality wins in conference. On the flip side, if you slip up against a team in the bottom half of the conference it can be an absolute killer. And there are plenty of chances for that.

maybe but I saw a stat last night that the 6 wins for UF so far were all bs teams 200 and below in the rpi

I've seen too many seasons where we were supposed to be in the top tier of the conference and other teams were put down.
But it's the SEC. Every game will be tough unless we shoot well and play to our potential. Road games are never easy and we are bound to lose some to so called "bad" teams. And I've seen Ole Miss and Vandy play and they aren't bad.
If a team exploits the holes in our defense(yes we still have them) and keeps it close then it only takes a couple of plays to steal the win.
So all you wide eyed optomists that think we will walk all over the lower tier of the SEC, forget about it.

Absolutely agree Tom. I think 11-7 is the benchmark if we win our last 3 OOC games as we should. Even then we may have to take at least one in the SEC tournament.
11-7 is IMHO an absolutely reasonable and reachable benchmark. Playing to our potential as you say, is the key. We did not last year.
