for some reason I was under the assumption that an employer can fire an employee at any time or place with no reason or any reason and thats ok.

They might have to pay unemployment checks until they got a job or whatever but it's not illegal.

am i mistaken?

Not entirely accurate. Cannot fire an employee based on the employee's race, sex, religion, and other statutorily protected categories. These categories are growing every year too. That would be illegal and the employee could be entitled to significant compensatory and even punitive damages (and in some circumstances reinstatement, although that rarely happens).

It's more accurate to say an employer can fire an employee for any reason or no reason at all (even if it's completely arbitrary or unfair) so long as the reason is not forbidden by statute.

It's what follows:

1) Race
2) Sex
3) Color
4) National Origin
5) Religion
6) For being over 40
7) Disabilities that can be reasonably accommodated.

In most states, you can still fire/not hire a person for their sexual orientation, weight, appearance, or anything in between.
