Want to buy a gift for GF.
We won't be going out on the water if the air temp is below 60, but the water temp may be.
Mostly looking for spring and fall use, where the temps here would be much like Louisiana.
I am thinking a 3mm shorty because she is cold natured.
What are the thoughts here?

My opinion is get a dry suit instead and layer accordingly underneath for water/air temps. It should be much more versatile.
Kokotat makes nice ones (old one I had) , Ursuit has some great ones (I have one of theirs now).
And since it's for a woman spend the extra money and get the zipper in the behind so she can use the restroom.

Waders
Dual purpose
Wetsuit if you are in Cali.

Drysuit-too expensive. Too hot.
Waders-not great if you fall out of a kayak in 50 foot deep water.

I haven't yak fished in the winter, but I plan on it. If I was concerned with water on my legs while paddling, I would have on something like Frogg Toggs over whatever pants I deemed appropriate for the temperature. I don't know where you'll be fishing, but if wearing a life jacket and fishing with a buddy, Hypothermia wouldn't be a big concern of mine. Not enough to start wearing wet suits at least.

This can't be overstated. Wetsuits are made for wearing in the water. With even moderate temperatures, you can quickly overheat in one on the surface.

If you are wearing your chest strap as you should, they will not fill with water if that's what you are implying. The water pressure on the outside is greater that the air pressure inside and the waders just collapse around you.
Waders Myth

Good post! I definitely vote for breathable waders and just layer appropriately underneath. Assuming you're either in super shallow water or wearing a pfd, she will be fine.
