I would personally lean towards Lionel trains: You can take a set built in the 20's, oil and lube the locomotive, and the odds are it will run just fine.
But, it is hard to make any case against LEGO. They should last for ever, and there is an infinite variety of what you can do with them.

I remember getting this set for my son when he was like 5 or so for a Christmas present from Santa....
Took me most of the night to put it together after he went to bed so it would be ready for him in the morning. It was well worth it though because he played wit that thing for years. We still have it put up in a box.

Nice... Both of the Ships are on my kid dresser in his room... ..I get antsy when he touches them.. knowing how long it took to assemble..
