Howard Cosell's awkward John Lennon assassination announcement remembered

I remember this. I was waiting for halftime highlights and this happened. I didn't really care about the Beatles and this announcement was really uncomfortable. It didn't help that he later pimped Nightline. Howard didn't have what we would refer to as a soul.

Funny to hear people bitch about media today wanting to rush to be the first to make an announcement and Cosell couldn't wait 3 seconds for a field goal.

I doubt Howard had much say as to if he did or didn't make that announcement. I'm sure the producers told him to.

The producers in the truck consulted w/Roone Arledge, the top dog at ABC on whether to announce it or not.
And it was announced with 3 seconds left on the clock.

I didn't think it was that bad at all. It was just Cosell talking in his normal announcing voice. Wouldn't have expected anything different from him.

that was actually news, news that the affected a great portion of the world, not like some fricking rapper got killed or one of the Kardashian/Hilton types released another sex tape
